The home of the month – August

The rain is pouring down in Uppsala, and the shiny summerdays seem pretty far away. Despite the bad weather, I have decided to take my bike to Flogsta and see how the students enjoy their living over there. Flogsta is a part of Uppsala that is located about 3 km west from down town Uppsala. Flogsta is a student area, and it is build up around two streets, Sternanders väg in the middle and Flogstavägen that twist around the whole area. I put on my best rain-outfit and then I am ready to bicycle the 10 minutes ride to Flogsta.

I have been promised a guided tour in a student apartment from a few students that share a 4 room apartment divided on 70 square meters in one of the houses in Flogsta. I knock on the door and after a while, the door opens and Timon and Josefin is standing in the hall. They live here together with their friend Anna. They welcome me into their apartment and start to show me around. Josefin who study at the Materprogram of Sociology, started to collect queue-days at Studentstaden in 2005, and in August of 2008, she got the apartment. Josefin and her boyfriend Timon who comes from the Netherlands, have been a couple since 2006, and when Timon moved to Uppsala for his studies in 2008, they moved in to the apartment together. Because of the large size of the apartment, their friend Anna moved in as well. The apartment is divided on 3 bedrooms, one living room, a kitchen and a bathroom, and together the pay 5670kr in rent. Water, heat and internet is included in the rent so they have to pay extra each month for the electric. “The apartment is very neat, a low rent, close to the nature and to the grocery store and also not that far from the university” is Josefins answer when I ask her what the best thing with this apartment is. “A great pizza-place is very close from here as well” says Timon, and I can really tell that they like living here in Flogsta. When I ask the couple if there is anything that they dislike about their housingsituation, Josefin answers that she is a little bit tired of all the old bicycles in the bicyclestand outside the house and Timon says that the children who lives in the apartment one floor up, can be extra noisy sometimes.

After a while, I thank Josefin and Timon for letting me visit their lovely apartment in Flogsta, and I wish them good luck with their further studies.
